Scheduled junction improvements at the junction of New Road and New Road East will start on Tuesday 5 May. This work is part of a important safer routes to school improvement scheme.
Safety improvements
These improvements follow extensive public consultation, including a formal Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process, approved in March 2025. Feedback from residents and businesses has been carefully considered and incorporated into the final design.
Key enhancements, as shown in the map over the page, include:
- Two new pedestrian crossing points to make it safer and easier to cross the road
- A smaller junction entrance to slow traffic and improve safety for everyone
- A pavement build out at the corner so people walking can see traffic more clearly, and drivers can see them
- A wider pavement on the north side, with the bus stop moved, to improve access, make waiting safer and help reduce vehicle speeds
- New planting and better drainage to improve the look of the area and help manage surface water

What to expect during the work
- Duration: Originally eight weeks, however, due to the heavy rain and extreme heat, we hope to be fully finished by the middle of July.
- Working hours: 7:30am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday. Some weekend working may be required if there are delays caused by weather or other factors. Heavy machinery and noisy work will not start before 8:30am to minimise disruption
- Dust and noise prevention: Dust and soundproof barriers will be installed on fences facing properties.
- Work immediately outside of Penbridge Junior School: These will take place during half term to minimise disruption to parents, children and school staff
Traffic management
-
- New Road East will be closed at the junction with New Road East, with diversions clearly signposted. Access between Byron Rd and New Rd East will remain available
- On New Rd two-way temporary traffic signals will be installed, when required.
We appreciate your patience while these improvements are carried out. Our contractor, Colas, will work to keep noise and inconvenience to a minimum throughout the project.
