Portsmouth City Council is carrying out a programme of overnight road resurfacing works on several key routes across the city between September and November 2026. The works form part of the council’s ongoing investment in maintaining Portsmouth’s roads and keeping the network safe and reliable for everyone who uses it.

The works will be delivered by Colas and will take place overnight between 9pm and 5am to help minimise disruption during the day.

When and where are the works taking place?

Location Dates
Anglesea Road and St Michael’s Road 28 September to 12 October 2026
Marketway Roundabout 26 to 28 October 2026
Marketway (westbound) 27 October to 4 November 2026
Hope Street Roundabout 2 to 4 November 2026
Hope Street 3 to 13 November 2026

How will the works affect travel?

Temporary road closures and signed diversion routes will be in place while the works are carried out. During the resurfacing of Marketway Roundabout, an extended diversion route will operate via Rudmore Roundabout, Kingston Crescent, Kingston Road, Fratton Road and Lake Road.

Drivers should allow extra time for journeys and follow signed diversion routes. Cyclists will also be directed via signed diversion routes where required.

Pedestrian access

On a small number of nights, the pedestrian crossing on Park Road will be temporarily closed while resurfacing work takes place. A temporary crossing facility will be provided nearby to maintain access for people walking through the area.

What to expect

Some parts of the work, particularly the removal of existing road surfaces, may be noisy. The contractor will work to keep noise and disruption to a minimum wherever possible.
