We’re asking residents and businesses across Portsmouth for their views on a new scheme that could save drivers money and give them access to a car without owning one.

Car clubs are already run successfully in other cities across the UK, and we would like to understand whether there is a desire to create one in the city.

Car clubs can save members money by giving them access to a shared low-emission vehicle when it is needed, without the expense of owning a car. They also reduce the number of cars on local roads.

Thank you to everyone who shared their views through our recent car club survey. The results will now be analysed to find out if there is enough interest to introduce a car club for the city.

FAQs

Why introduce a car club?

Evidence suggests that each car in a car club scheme could replace up to 10 privately-owned vehicles on the road.

This is why car clubs are one of a range of ways we are looking at reducing air pollution and making our air cleaner and safer to breathe.

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits for drivers and the environment, including:

  • Access to a car without having to own one
  • Cheaper travel option – at a range of flexible prices
  • Access to a fleet of low-emission vehicles that you can unlock with your phone
  • Play your part in reducing the number of vehicles on the road, meaning less congestion and more on-street parking space
  • Improvements to air quality and the health of your family and loved ones

What happens next?

Your views will let us know if there is interest in a car club scheme in Portsmouth. Once the survey has been analysed, it is hoped that a car club scheme can be introduced to parts of the city next year.
