Cycle My City

We’re working with several local organisations to make cycling easier and safer for everyone in the city, whether you are already a confident cyclist or would like to build your confidence.

Throughout the year we’ll be offering residents the chance to get involved in the Cycle My City campaign. This includes free cycle training and confidence-building activities to help people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to live healthier lives by travelling on two (or three) wheels.

If you’re a more experienced rider, you’ll even have the chance to become a Cycle Way-Maker, using your enthusiasm for cycling to help others.

Looking to book a FREE adult group ride? Get in touch travel@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

Let us know your preferences for when you would like the ride to take place, for instance, if there are any dates, days or time of day that you would prefer. Please also tell us how many people (over 18s only) and if you are a resident, community group member, or you’re organising a ride on behalf of a workplace.

Why cycle more?

Cycling is a healthier and cheaper way of travelling than by car and can help you see your city in a new way. Whether you regularly use your bike or would like to cycle more, it’s a great way to keep your mind and body active and enjoy more of our wonderful city. By cycling to work, school, college, university or simply for fun, you can help make our roads less congested, making our air cleaner for everyone to breathe.

Throughout the year, we’ll invite residents to take part in free activities, including events, group rides and training, at various locations throughout the city.

See.Sense smart cycling project

The See.Sense smart cycling project with Cycle My City is a pilot scheme which helps us collect valuable insights into the riding behaviour of people who cycle regularly in Portsmouth.

We’re seeking enthusiastic people to join the Cycle My City Way Makers riding community, with a unique opportunity to boost their cycling experience. We have a limited number of the award-winning See.Sense ICON3 rear light. If you’re selected for the project, you’ll attach the light to your bike for a year. The light will not only get you noticed in the dark, but it will also help us gain anonymous information about popular routes, distances, ride frequency, average speeds and road conditions by tracking your regular rides. This valuable information will help us create a better, safer cycling network for Portsmouth.

Data from the See.Sense ICON3 rear light is recorded via an app which you can download via your smartphone. You’ll be able to track your progress and receive updates on your performance, including the distances you travel, the number of trips you take, your average speed, road conditions and near-misses. It also records the calories you burn, and the fuel and C02 you save by cycling instead of using a car. Special settings allow the light to work in the daytime, and sensors will alert you if your parked bike is being tampered with. It will also notify a loved one if you experience a collision or fall.

To discover how the See.Sense ICON3 rear light and app work, visit See.Sense | The App – YouTube where you’ll find a number of instructional videos, including customer experiences and ‘How to’ guides.

To register your interest, contact travel@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. We’re looking for people to make up a representative sample of the city’s population, so we’ll ask you to complete a short survey. The survey closing date is Tuesday 5 December. If you’re successful, we’ll send you instructions on how to set up the light and app and we will deliver the light to you. Read the terms and conditions.
