Many people in Portsmouth are choosing electric vehicles (EVs), with the number of EVs in the city set to increase to over 38,000 by 2034. It is crucial that we act now to meet the growing demand for a variety of reliable, publicly accessible chargepoints across our city and promote cleaner air and address the climate emergency.
While many EV owners prefer the ease of home charging, that option isn’t always available for everyone. By introducing more on-street chargepoints, all Portsmouth residents will have greater access to reliable charging facilities, encouraging the switch to electric vehicles, reducing emissions, and supporting the city’s efforts to improve air quality.
We’ve developed a new electric vehicle infrastructure (EVI) strategy setting out our plans and policies to improve charging infrastructure for the next ten years up to 2034.
The EVI strategy is designed to support everyone who lives or works in the city, as well as visitors. It aims to enhance travel options and make it easier for people to charge their electric vehicles.
The strategy sets out objectives such as:
- Prioritising electric vehicle infrastructure for residents, enabling more people to choose to transition from petrol or diesel to electric vehicles
- Transforming the provision of charging infrastructure to promote Portsmouth as an EV friendly destination for those visiting or working here
- Working with fleet operators to support conversion to EV, including providing infrastructure where required
- Working in partnership to support shared and public transport modes to convert to EV

In the future, the EVI strategy will inform decision-making processes, ensuring that initiatives to provide more charging infrastructure contribute to the city’s long-term strategic objectives, including economic growth and environmental sustainability. The EVI strategy is a vital component of the Portsmouth Transport Strategy and compliments the emerging Portsmouth Local Plan.
Consultation
The EVI strategy was developed collaboratively with input from various stakeholders and underwent extensive public consultation from 18 September to 29 October 2023.
