How are the locations of new EV chargepoints decided and how can I have a say?
All proposed locations for new on-street residential EV chargepoints were based on requests from residents, and each site underwent extensive checks to ensure they were suitable and could meet safety requirements.
Formal consultations as part of a Traffic Regulation Order are being carried out to seek feedback on the proposals. The first batch of proposed EV chargepoints started consultation in 2025, with all proposed sites due to be taken through a public consultation throughout 2025. People living near proposed locations for chargepoints will receive letters to let them know about plans.
All feedback on the TROs is included in a report for the Cabinet Member for Transport’s decision meeting, where objections to locations are considered. People who send objections to the TRO are invited to this public decision meeting, and you can see details of when meetings will take place here.
If approved, letters will be sent to residents to confirm the date the new chargepoints will be installed. An on-street chargepoint provided by Zest will then be installed this year, and a marked EV bay will be painted on the road.
How are proposed locations for new EV chargepoints selected?
We have considered locations requested by residents to ensure there is a demand for use and that the chargepoints will not remain unused. These locations were then reviewed for suitability, including considering safety and accessibility to lampposts.
Wherever possible, we have aimed to minimise the impact on parking by proposing EV bays at the ends of roads. However, as the chargepoints rely on electricity from nearby lampposts, this has not always been possible.
Once a decision is made on the location of EV chargepoints, what are the next steps?
Residents near proposed EV chargepoints will be sent a letter by our appointed chargepoint operator Zest, before any work begins to install them, including a timeline for when they can expect the process to begin. The installation will involve marking the designated EV bay on the road and having Zest, the appointed operator, install the chargepoint.
How will the usage of EV chargepoints be monitored and evaluated?
Zest will monitor how chargepoints are used and analyse data to ensure the network is working to address the growing demand for EV chargepoints in the city.
