The Portsmouth Bus Stop Standard

A new evidence-based bus stop standard has been created that will shape how Portsmouth plans, prioritises and invests in bus stop improvements over the coming years.

Developed by Portsmouth City Council, alongside consultants ITP and WSP, the new standard introduces a clear hierarchy for all 579 bus stops in the city. Each stop has been given a 72 point audit, assessed and scored using service frequency, population density and proximity to key destinations, creating a robust tool that helps the council target investment where it will have the greatest impact on passenger experience, accessibility and network performance.

The launch comes at a time of major transformation for Portsmouth’s bus network. Thanks to sustained investment through the city’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, including upgrades to roadside infrastructure, implementing more bus lanes, faster and more reliable services, and improved passenger information, bus use has grown by 53% over the past three years, with more than one million trips now made every month.

Each category within the new standard sets out the required level of infrastructure for that type of stop, creating a clear pathway for consistent upgrades across the network. This ranges from essential features such as raised kerbs, Real‑Time Information and accessible travel information, through to premium enhancements including ergonomic seating, smart lighting, cycle‑hire integration, Wi‑Fi and indoor waiting areas. In addition, smart new bus flags and bus stop branding delivers a premium, modern feel to the bus stop, encouraging use by new and occasional passengers.
