Southern Gas Networks (SGN) and Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), will be completing essential work in this area. There will be a full road closure to accommodate this from New Road Junction with Kingston Road to Inverness Road from Friday 31 July 2026 until Monday 17 August 2026, traffic management will be in place 24/7 for this closure.
In addition, resurfacing works on Kingston Road (A2047), from Lake Road junction along Fratton Road to Binsteed Road will take place. These works form the final phase of the Lake Road and Kingston Road project under Portsmouth’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), funded by the Department for Transport
By coordinating these activities under a single traffic management plan, we can reduce the need for multiple road closures in the future. Access will be provided for all New Road residents throughout the closure.
These resurfacing works commence from Monday 10 August 2026 to Friday 21 August 2026 will be carried out overnight to ensure that resurfacing activities can be carried out safely and effectively. The works will be completed over 8 working days in phased sections, controlled by temporary signals, starting at Lake Road and progressing up to Kingston Road. The working hours will be from 8pm to 6am
Whilst the works are underway, the following restrictions will be in place. We kindly ask all road users and pedestrians to adhere to the traffic management measures to ensure everyone’s safety and minimise disruption.
Temporary traffic measures
Drivers and cyclists
- For residential access down New Road, residents will be supplied with a pass that you can show the gate person that will safely direct you through the site to your property.
- Cars will have to adhere to the temporary traffic signals and follow signed diversion routes during the works.
- The Hanway Road junction with Fratton Road will be closed for the duration of the works, this area will operate as a site compound.
- Cyclists using the route will need to follow the temporary traffic signals or dismount and use the footpath.
Pedestrians
- Pedestrian access is maintained throughout and temporary pedestrian crossings will be present where appropriate.
Deliveries
- During the New Road closure, delivery vehicles will need to enter and exist via the eastern end of New Road and use Iverness Road to turn around, following the signed diversion. We will do our best to accommodate access where possible.
Bus stops suspended at night between 8pm to 6am
- New Road bus stops near junction with Kingston Road will be suspended from Friday 31 July to Friday 17 August.
- Fratton Road bus stops on Lake Road near the junction will be temporarily suspended from Monday 10 August to Wednesday 12 August. For services 3, 7, 19 and 23 passengers should use the “Clarendon Street” bus stops for eastbound and westbound travel.
- Hanway Road (northbound) bus stop will be suspended, and a temporary stop will be placed north of Hanway Road junction from Monday 10 August to Friday 14 August. “Hanway Road” (southbound) will be suspended on Fratton Road from Thursday 13 August to Friday 14 August.
- Hanway Road”(southbound) and “Queens Road” (northbound) will be suspended on Kingston Road from Monday 17 August to Wednesday 19 August.
- Bus stops will be open as usual between 6am to 8pm.

Southbound 3, 7, 23 → via London Road→ Kingston Crescent→ Mile End Road→ Commercial Road.
Northbound 18 → via Arundel Street→ Holbrook Road →Lake Road.
